John Thomas Young Gilroy (30 May 1898 – 11 April 1985) was an English artist and illustrator, best known for his advertising posters for Guinness, the Irish stout.

Born in Whitley Bay, Northumberland, England, Gilroy attended Durham University until his studies were interrupted by World War I, during which he served with the Royal Field Artillery. He resumed studying at the Royal College of Art in London. He remained here as a teacher for a time until gaining employment at S.H. Benson's advertising agency. Here he created the iconic advertisement art for Guinness (featuring the Zoo Keeper and animals enjoying Guinness) which he is best know for.

Very good. Original drawing (oil pastel on paper). Drawing measures 39.4 X 26.7 CM (15.5 X 10.5"). Housed in a 1" wood and gilt painted frame measuring 64.8 X 52 CM (25.5 X 20.5") with beige, gilt and white matting. Signed in bottom left in pencil. Some wear to frame.

A strong image depicting a big horned sheep staring out. The light plays beautifully upon his fur and a mountain is visible in the distance. Gilroy achieves beautiful lines and textures upon the animal with only scarce and subtle lines surrounding.
