Haynes Photo Studios. Stereopticon Slides of Yellowstone National Park
Set of 100 Original Slides in Box Along with "Haynes Guide - Yellowstone Park: A Practical Handbook Containing Accurate and Concise Descriptions of the Entire Park Region, Maps, Distances, Altitudes Geyser Time Tables and All Necessary Information, Profusely Illustrated" by Guptill, A.B (1906).
ST Paul, Minn.: Haynes Photo Studio, [circa 1900]. Very good. Set of 100 hand-coloured lantern slides. No broken images. Each slide is numbered and captioned with the image clear and brightly coloured. In original wooden slide box with some staining and wear. Black cloth lining in top of a box with a 'Notice to the Operator' affixed discussing proper slide use. Box closes with a metal clasp and ring (both slightly rusty) a worn sticker beneath the clasp provides instructions regarding the case and ring. Also included is the "Haynes Guide - Yellowstone Park - Illustrated" a small 12mo in orange wrappers (showing some soiling with wear and small tears to end of spine). 143 pages with folding map at end as well as many B/W illustrations and diagrams. A beautiful set of slides supplemented wonderfully by the book containing the photographer's images and pertaining to the same subject matter.
F. Jay Haynes (1853-1921) was official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad and for Yellowstone National Park. His association with the park began in 1872 when he began a lease on a small photographic studio within the park. His photographs were widely published in articles, journals, books and turned into stereographs and postcards in the late 19th and early 20th century. Haynes' photo studio in the was recently re-opened for a brief period by the Yellowstone Park Foundation.
