La Roche, F. Paul Shawaway, Umatilla
[Original Photograph].Seattle, Washington: , 1899. Very good. Original silver print portrait. 9.5 X 75 inches on a slightly larger piece of card. In dark gray metallic brushed frame with dark gray and black matting. Information regarding the image is visible on the bottom of the photograph. The title of the portrait is written on the card beneath as well. Slight wear and foxing to the photograph with a small crease to the top right corner. A nice image.
Studio portrait showing a Umatilla man sitting for the camera against a white backdrop. He wears a hat with a feather stuck in it, a blanket around his shoulders, formal shirt and shell necklace. The image shows the textures of his skin and blanket beautifully.
The Umatilla lived beside one of the world's richest salmon fisheries in what today is northern Oregon and southern Washington State, along the banks of the Columbia and the river named after them.
